THE CLIMBING TOWER
Neuruppin, Germany
The old water tower in the city of Neuruppin was purchased by a private developer and renovated into an indoor and outdoor rock climbing space. The tower which boasts a height of nearly 98 feet (30 meters), has several large windows which allow the tower to be filled with a great deal of light during the day, but at night time lacked the appropriate illumination required to run the center in the evening.
Our goal was to note only create provisions for functional lighting within the tower, but to also encourage people in the community to visit the space by using light to create a visually distinct and inviting brand for the tower. The reservoir acts as a large screen ideal for projection mapping, where abstract content related to water is displayed. The interiors were designed to be flexible, by using tuneable luminaries for functional climbing hours as well as special events in which the community would visit and be introduced to the sport by using colors upon the interior facades.
